Andrej Sovinc

Founder

NaravaNarave works in partnerships with the best experts and organisations and is run by Andrej Sovinc. He has extensive experience in the planning, establishment and management of protected areas/Natura 2000 sites and in habitat restoration. He has a long history of international conservation.

Andrej was initially trained as a civil engineer (B.Sc.) and specialised in the management and restoration of wetlands. He then completed post-graduate studies on nature conservation (M.Sc.) and received his doctorate on protected area systems.

He worked at the Water Management Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia. Since 2002 he has managed the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park/Natura 2000 site in Slovenia. As a university lecturer, he gives courses on protected area management at universities in Slovenia and Austria.

He has also been actively involved in international nature conservation; e.g. he coordinated IUCN European Action Plan for Protected Areas (from 1995 to 2004) and since 2012 he has been coordinating the European network of over 700 experts in the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, as the European Vice-Chair.

Andrej is an ornithologist; he has compiled the Atlas of Wintering Birds in Slovenia and authored several other publications on birds and nature conservation.
